The EMG-89 Dual Mode Pickup has been through two generations. The original Dual-mode (EMG-DM) design was incredibly sophisticated for its time (1979). The DM was an 18-Volt model with a single output available only in an Alnico magnet version. The EMG-DM was abandoned in late 1985, but the concept was revived early in 1989 when EMG came upon a more innovative design featuring “two pickups in one”, the current EMG-89.

With sweeping harmonic overtones and clarity, the EMG-J pickup has characteristic jazz bass tone, but due to EMG’s custom design adds a modern broad tonal response that will add new dimensions to your bass playing. EMG’s design has a very low ratio of resistance to inductance, which increases low frequency response, while the radiused ceramic bar magnet endows the tone with tight mid-range punch and dynamic high end response, all with less noise and more signal. So whether you play fretted or fretless bass, playing live or in the studio, you’ll get an incredible full sound to get the job done.

The nice thing about EMG’s is that you can experiment.. Even the US made Passives from EMG have the quick disconnect system.. Buy an extra or two pickups from EMG, and just plug them in.. Of course, you can’t or shouldn’t mix actives with passives..
Value:
I bought mine used, and then bought another new.. 90 bucks, which is steep, but they are worth it..
Sound:
This pickup rocks.. I’ve been playing for over 25 years and if you have the chops, a good guitar and use this pickup, it will NOT sound sterile.. It just reports what it hears from your guitar.. So, if you are using a cheap guitar, you’ll get a cheap sound from this pickup.. To be honest, some don’t like it because they are so used to getting colored sounds from Passives.. It rocks.. It’s made of modern matarials and it helps prevent shock, etc..etc. Why use passives? I don’t..
The EMG 81 is EMG’s most famous model; the one that started a revolution. Utilizing powerful ceramic magnets and close aperture coils, the tone is endowed with detailed intensity, incredible amounts of high end cut and fluid sustain. Traditionally used in the bridge position, this pickup will make your leads slice right through even the densest mix like a hot knife. When used in both positions the sound can only be described as blistering. Other recommended pairings include the classic 81/85 setup and the versatile 81/60 combo.

Feature:
This is a mean nasty pickup….must have for any metal guitarist
Quality:
Totally solid. Absolute quality
Value:
I paid $79 a piece. That’s about $50 less than I expected to pay when I went “shopping”
Desirability:
Solid black…they look badass
Sound:
Mean, crushing. This is the best rock pick-up ever. High output and absolute crunch removed the necessity of an outboard pre-amp for me. The sustain is unbelievable. My only complaint would be that they are sooooo powerful that they pickup every little noise. Every pickup hole in ALL my guitars will soon be plugged with EMG 81′s
Support:
Unknown
Overall:
I expect to be using EMG 81 pickups for a long time. I use them in conjunction with Marshall heads and cabinets. Its definitely the best pickup I’ve ever tried in 25 years of axemadness. It has given me the tone I want for every note I need to play.
