Yamaha HS80M Active Studio Monitor (120 Watts, 1x8 in.)The new HS Series powered monitors were designed to be true studio reference monitors in the tradition of the famous NS10Ms. When choosing your next pair of near field reference monitors, remember it’s not just important that they sound good; they have to be an honest reference for your mix. The new HS Series of reference monitors were designed to give you exceptionally flat response so you can really trust what you hear. That means that mixes that sound good on Yamaha HS speakers will sound good on anything. In fact, that’s the ultimate test of a reference monitor. Even better than that, HS series speakers not only sound good, they look great, too.

JBL LSR4326P Powered Studio Monitor (220 Watts, 1x6.25 in.)The biggest challenge for anyone producing audio is creating a mix that sounds great on all playback systems. Much of the problem is caused by the mixing room interacting with the studio monitors and creating an inaccurate picture at the mix position. Overall:
Been using these for a number of weeks now as a second reference set of monitors. I have these hooked up to my general PC where I do most of my casual listening on. I use Behringer Truth 2031A’s as my main monitors with my DAW. I was lucky enough to get my BM5A’s for $404 each brand new. When you get them it is essential to break them in. When you first hook them up the mid’s might sound a little scooped, or different then what you’re used to. This goes away and flattens out after playing music for hours over two or three days through them! After the break in period they are perfect. I found in my room, which is fully Auralex treated, that I had to set the switches to: bass +2 and treble +1. With the switches in that position the sound appears to be correct. Don’t be afraid to use the switches to boost! With the bass at +2 these things really can kick. A rating down to 50hz doesn’t mean you don’t get anything lower, it just means it starts to drop below their rating of +/-3db. As I mentioned I use these as a second reference. I love my Behringer Truths and that’s why they’re my mains. But these are a great set to double check my mixes on and would also make a great set of mains. I highly recommend these speakers, and I’ve tried so many, even the BM15A’s. Just make sure to break them in before you judge them!

Feature:
Love the RMC

Quality:
These things feel like they will last for a very long time.

Value:
I probably wouldn’t pay list price for them, but it’s not too bad. Although, if you pay list price for any audio equipment, you are getting shafted.

Desirability:
These things are sexy in the studio, and the handles on the sides make them easy to grab and move for setting up placement.

Sound:
Especially with the RMC, mixes on these speakers translate to other systems very well.

Ease of Use:
You can hook these things up to your system using digital (AES/EBU) or analog, ad easily connects to whatever system you’ve got.

Support:
Haven’t had to deal with any warranty issues, or replacement parts. I think the best support a company can give is not needing to give very much.

Overall:
I currently have a 2.1 setup (2 of the 8 inchers and a subwoofer). I would consider upgrading by buying 3 more of the same speakers for a 5.1 mix set up. Other than that, I plan on using these for years to come.
